How do I get more grass than weeds in my lawn?

Q.

My lawn is more weeds than grass, how do I encourage better grass growth?

Dennis Mundt

A.

  • Spraying the lawn off completely and starting again is probably the best way to rejuvenate the lawn. This is best done in spring or autumn.
  • If you're not wanting to start again, spray the lawn with a selective herbicide that controls broadleaf weeds without harming the remaining grass.
  • Once the weeds have died, rake out the dead material and apply Tui LawnForce Lawn Preparation Mix or top soil to the area. Sow lawn seed over the area and water well (water daily if required depending upon the weather).
  • Some other tips that require a little less effort than resowing are applying lime, as the presence of broadleaf weeds is a sign that the soil pH is acidic and needs “sweetening”, and apply a lawn fertiliser such as Tui LawnForce New Lawns, which rejuvenates tired lawns and stimulates new growth.
