Hi there, I have a small yard and want to follow your planting in a pot instructions. Before I head to the local Mitre 10 store to get all the products, I wanted to ask if the variety I have is suitable for a large pot or planter? I have one Apollo and one Kakariki to pollinate each other. Will they work in my desired set up? I also have an unknown guava variety which I want to plant in a pot as well. If you have any knowledge on this too, it will be greatly appreciated. Kind regards Sashi

Hi Sashi, feijoas can be planted in pots or containers. Birds pollinate feijoa trees, so as long as they are in a position where birds can visit, your fruit will be pollinated. Apollo and Kakariki are both good varieties. I would suggest planting them in a large half wine barrel, this goes for the guava tree as well. Our recommendation would be to plant in a container no smaller than 500-600mm in diameter, the bigger the better. Use a quality mix such as Tui Citrus and Fruit mix which is specially formulated for growing fruit trees in pots. The key to success is regular watering (every 2-3 days depending on the weather) and feeding during the growing season, feed feijoas in pots with a controlled release fertiliser such as Tui Enrich Fruit, Citrus, Trees & Shrub every 6 months, in early spring and again in late summer. Mulch around the tree to help conserve soil moisture using Tui Mulch & Feed. Trim trees to keep them compact, feijoas fruit on current seasons growth so by trimming will encourage better fruiting. Guava fruit on new shoots on 2-4 year old wood, they fruit best with regular pruning. The Tui Team.
