Q.
My newly planted strawberry plants are browning and dying. I planted them in strawberry mix, added strawberry food and water them often. What am I doing wrong?
A.
- You don't say whether your strawberry plants are planted in the garden or in pots.
- Tui Strawberry mix contains the right balance of nutrients to give strawberry plants the best possible start and to promote flowering and fruiting.
- The brown foliage you describe sounds like the plants may have had too much fertiliser applied.
- If planted in Tui strawberry mix and also an application of strawberry food, it will be a double dose of fertiliser for the plants.
- Tui Strawberry food is not recommended for strawberries in pots and containers as it has no control mechanism and if over-applied there is a risk of burning plant roots.
- Tui Strawberry food is suitable for plants in the garden and can be applied every 4-6 weeks in the growing season.
- If you suspect the plants have had too much fertiliser applied put the sprinkler on to the plants for 10-15 minutes to flush out the excess fertiliser.
- For strawberries growing in pots and containers use Tui Enrich Fruit, Citrus, Tree & Shrub controlled release fertiliser.
- Once the plants start to flower liquid feed with a specialty liquid fertiliser such as Tui Superfood Strawberry liquid plant food. This will help promote flowering and improve fruiting as well as improving fruit flavour.

Why are my newly planted strawberry plants going brown? Comments
Its the last month of autumn and temperature outside is between 13 - 18 C. My alpine strawberry leaves are turning yellow. I water them every 2nd or 3rd day; feed them with composted fish fertilizer on top of fertilizer for berries. Is it insufficient watering?

Hi Janet, depending upon the weather reduce watering frequency, they may be getting overwatered for the time of year. Are they being overfed? Sometimes too much fertiliser can have the same affect as not enough fertiliser. Plant growth slows down in winter and they don’t take up fertiliser when not actively growing, come spring start increasing the watering and feeding.
