Why are my strawberry leaves going brown?

Q.

Hi, my strawberry plant leaves are browning and dying off. I planted them in strawberry mix, added strawberry food and water them often. What am I doing wrong? Thanks, Jo.

A.

It seems like you have done all the right things to start off your berries. The burning (browning of leaves) could be from watering in the heat of the day. This is the most common cause of burning this time of the year. Water before 10am in the morning or after 5pm where possible. Sometimes plants that are stressed with too much water or too little shed their excess leaves too.

Keep an eye on your watering and make sure the soil doesn't dry out in-between watering or that the soil isn’t water logged at all. An application of Tui Organic Seaweed Plant Tonic now will give the plants a boost and you can continue to apply every few weeks. If your strawberries are planted in garden beds keep up with the applications of Tui Strawberry Food every four weeks during the growing season. Feed strawberries planted in pots and containers with a controlled release fertiliser such as Tui Enrich Fruit, Citrus, Tree & Shrub.

Why are my strawberry leaves going brown? Comments

  • Its the last month of autumn and temperature outside is between 13 - 18 C. My alpine strawberry leaves are turning yellow. I water them every 2nd or 3rd day; feed them with composted fish fertilizer on top of fertilizer for berries. Is it insufficient watering?

    • Hi Janet, depending upon the weather reduce watering frequency, they may be getting overwatered for the time of year. Are they being overfed? Sometimes too much fertiliser can have the same affect as not enough fertiliser. Plant growth slows down in winter and they don’t take up fertiliser when not actively growing, come spring start increasing the watering and feeding.
