Will blueberries grow in pots and containers?

  Northland
  March

Q.

Hi, can I grow blueberries in a container? Thanks.

Natalie

A.

Hi Natalie, yes, blueberries grow well in pots and containers, and raised garden beds. They prefer a slightly acidic soil, select a quality potting mix that is free draining, there are several mixes to choose from that will be suitable, Tui Pot Power, Tui Citrus & Fruit mix or Tui Strawberry mix. Regular feeding throughout the growing season will improve fruit flavour, for plant in containers use a controlled release fertiliser such as Tui Enrich Fruit, Citrus, Tree and Shrub controlled release fertiliser. The best blueberry varieties  for growing in Northland are the Rabbiteye varieties, they require less winter chilling to produce flowers and fruit, as well as being evergreen, so do not lose their leaves in winter so always look good in pots and containers.
