Can I fertilise my newly sown lawn?

Q.

I am re-patching my Lawn. I sowed a new area of lawn in April, a bit late perhaps, but had quite a good strike. Can I put some Tui Lawn Force New Lawns on now, I am a bit scared of burning the new lawn. The pack directions say this is a slow release fertiliser. How often should I put it on.

Jim Hewes

A.

  • Tui LawnForce New Lawns is the only fertiliser suitable to apply at the time of sowing seed or to newly established lawns, it does not burn when applied at the correct application rate.
  • It is a three month slow release fertiliser that works through stimulating soil microbial activity and so helps improve root development.
  • If autumn is mild and soil temperatures still warm in your region then it should be okay to apply LawnForce New Lawns in April.
  • Winter is not a good time to fertilise lawns as they are not actively growing and so do not absorb the fertiliser, it washes away.
  • Three months after applying LawnForce New Lawns apply LawnForce All Purpose slow release fertiliser which has a higher nitrogen content, do this in late spring, early summer or autumn.
