When can I apply fertiliser to my newly sown lawn?

Q.

My lawn is two months old and was sown in November, it looks like it needs some help. How soon can I start fertilising and is Tui Seaweed Plant Tonic okay to use on new lawns?

Kelvin Bradley

A.

  • Rule of thumb is to wait 14-16 weeks before applying fertiliser to newly sown lawns as the risk of burning new grass growth is high.
  • Blended fertilisers such as Tui Lawn Fertiliser are too concentrated and will burn new growth if applied before the lawn is 14-16 weeks established.
  • There is an exception which is Tui LawnForce New Lawns slow release lawn fertiliser can be applied  when sowing a new lawn and to a newly sown lawn.
  • If your lawn is looking patchy that is common, once the grass gets to approximately 10cm high mow it on a high setting to take the top 1/3 off the grass, this will thicken the lawn up. Do this for three to four mowings and you should have a thicker looking lawn.
  • Use a catcher to collect the clippings otherwise the lawn will die if left to rot.
  • In summer when lawns are under stress due to heat and drought a liquid fertiliser is a more gentle way to feed lawns.
  • Tui Seaweed Plant Tonic is safe to use on new lawns and will help stimulate root growth as well as encourage strong new growth.
