LAWNFORCE® HUB

Guide to Lawn Fertiliser Types

Tui How to choose the right lawn fertiliser

A well-maintained lawn is the most effective way to prevent weeds. An actively growing lawn with regular mowing, watering and fertilising will naturally crowd out unwanted weeds and stimulate root growth for a more resilient lawn to withstand wear, drought and seasonal stress.

Autumn and spring are the key feeding windows for New Zealand lawns when they are actively growing. Lawn fertiliser provides the key nutrients lawns need to thrive. They contain a balance of nutrients for healthy grass growth.

The main nutrients are:

  • Nitrogen (N) drives lush, green leaf growth
  • Phosphorus (P) supports strong root establishment
  • Potassium (K) improves water uptake, resilience and seedling development
  • Trace elements including iron for rapid green up to correct nutrient imbalances

Fertiliser choice is often determined by lawn size, convenience and ease of use.

Granular Blended Fertilisers

  • A blend of nutrients to feed lawns for up to 10 weeks. It's a cost-effective way to give lawns a boost but must be applied evenly as it has no control mechanism. Uneven spread or over-application can cause lawns to burn.
  • Tui Lawn Fertiliser is a reliable all purpose blended fertiliser.

Benefits

  • Feeds lawns for up to 10 weeks.
  • Encourages dense grass growth to crowd out unwanted broadleaf weeds.
  • Contains sulphate of iron to control moss and enhance deep green colour.
  • Apply to established lawns in spring and autumn.

Slow-Release Lawn Fertilisers

  • Tui LawnForce® slow release fertilisers are the most efficient way to feed lawns continuously for up to 16 weeks.
  • With easy to apply, dust-free prills, these ProGrade fertilisers are used by turf specialists throughout New Zealand.
  • Apply using a Tui LawnForce® Hand-held or Broadcast Spreader for even application.

Benefits

  • Stimulates root growth for a more resilient lawn by activating soil microbial activity.
  • Nutrient release is triggered by soil temperature and moisture.
  • Contains iron for rapid green up.
  • The small prill size prevents fertiliser burn in lawns.
  • Apply in spring and autumn.

Variants include:

  • New Lawns - low nitrogen formulation, stimulates root growth for a lawn that better withstands seasonal change. Ideal for rejuvenating tired lawns or patching existing lawns, and safe to use and when sowing new lawns. Feeds for 12 weeks.
  • All Purpose - a high nitrogen fertiliser for balanced feeding in spring and autumn. Low burn potential. Apply to a dry lawn. Feeds for 12 weeks.
  • Rapid Green - A high iron formulation for fast colour improvement, see results in 3-5 days. Feeds for 16 weeks.
  • Weedkill - a 2-in-1 selective herbicide formulation that feeds lawns and controls broadleaf weeds at the same time. Feeds for 12 weeks.

Liquid Fertilisers

Liquid or hose-on fertilisers are fast acting and convenient, especially good in summer when lawns are stressed or looking tired and needing a quick pick-me-up.

Tui LawnForce® Prickle Kill & Lawn Feed

  • 2 in 1 selective herbicide and fertiliser.
  • Targets prickle (Onehunga) weed and common broadleaf weeds. Apply in early spring or autumn for the best control of Onehunga weed.
  • Not suitable for newly established lawns - wait at least 16 weeks before applying selective herbicides.

Benefits

  • Feeds lawns and controls broadleaf weeds in one application.
  • Easy to use hose-on application.
  • Apply late autumn and early spring.

To get the best results always follow application rates on the back of the product pack.

The most effective way to apply lawn fertiliser is by using either a Tui LawnForce® Hand-held or Broadcast Spreader to ensure even application.
